BURN MANUFACTURING

BURN MANUFACTURING designs, produces and distributes fuel-efficient cookstoves and clean cooking appliances for sub-Saharan Africa, with a workforce of 2,500+ and a factory near Nairobi.

BURN MANUFACTURING designs, manufactures and distributes fuel-efficient modern cookstoves and other clean cooking appliances for sub-Saharan Africa. Founded in 2010, it describes itself as the largest vertically integrated modern cookstove company in the region. The company employs more than 2,500 people, a headcount it has built up since 2013, and half of its workforce are women.

Operations are split between a design lab and company headquarters on Vashon Island, Washington, in the United States, and a manufacturing facility just outside Nairobi, Kenya. The factory has a capacity of over 400,000 stoves a month and is solar-powered. Technical work spans fuel-efficient cookstove design, biomass appliance engineering, electric, hybrid and liquid fuel cooking technology, vertically integrated manufacturing and carbon credit project development. The company's products reach more than 20 countries across Africa, and it reports that over 33 million lives have been impacted.

BURN's portfolio covers fuel-efficient biomass cookstoves - described as Africa's best-selling modern cookstoves - alongside electric, hybrid and liquid fuel cooking appliances. It also develops carbon credit projects, verified by Gold Standard and MMECD, and reports 67.8m tons of CO2 emissions reduced. The business traces its origins to founder Peter Scott's work on deforestation in Zaire (now the Democratic Republic of Congo) in 1990, and to 13 years of cookstove consulting in Central America and sub-Saharan Africa before the company was established.
