About the Role We are looking for a driven Business Development Officer to join our field team and help expand Carbon's reach across Nigeria. You will be the face of Carbon in your territory — acquiring new customers, building relationships with merchants and community leaders, and driving loan disbursements. This is a high-impact, field-based role where your hustle directly translates to growth. Key Responsibilities: 1. Team Leadership & Development: Lead, coach, and motivate a team of Business Development Officers, fostering a high-performance, collaborative, and results-oriented culture. Provide ongoing training, guidance, and constructive feedback to enhance individual and team capabilities in prospecting, outreach, preliminary credit investigations, deal structuring, and loan portfolio management. Conduct regular performance reviews, set clear KPIs related to deal flow and portfolio health for team members. Facilitate daily team meetings to share best practices, discuss challenges, and align on strategic priorities for targeting SME, retail, and healthcare sectors. 2. Strategy & Planning: Contribute to the development and refinement of the overall business development strategy, identifying new market segments, industries, and partnership opportunities, with a strong emphasis on the SME sector, retail, and healthcare. Develop and maintain relationships with potential clients, including SME owners, entrepreneurs, and business professionals. Develop and maintain a strong pipeline of deals, meeting monthly and quarterly targets Conduct preliminary credit investigations to analyze applicants’ willingness and repayment capacity to determine the feasibility of granting loans. Analyze market data and competitive landscapes to identify growth opportunities and potential threats within the target sectors. 3. Operational Oversight & Performance Management: Monitor daily, weekly, and monthly team performance against set targets, providing real-time adjustments and support to ensure consistent deal flow and pipeline health. Ensure the team's diligent use of BDO Tracker for accurate pipeline management, activity tracking, and reporting. Guide the team in conducting thorough preliminary credit investigations to analyze applicants’ willingness and repayment capacity. Monitor and guide the team in managing existing loan portfolios to ensure timely repayment and mitigate credit risk. Identify and remove roadblocks for the team, ensuring smooth execution of business development initiatives. 4. Collaboration & Reporting: Prepare and present regular reports on team performance, pipeline status, deal flow metrics, and market insights to the Head of Sales and Partnerships. Collaborate with the Marketing team to optimize lead generation campaigns and messaging for the SME, retail, and healthcare segments. Initiate and manage partnerships with reputable organizations to facilitate lending to their customers. Potentially manage a portfolio of high-value or strategic prospects, demonstrating best practices in business development and loan origination within the SME sector. - OND/HND/BSc in any discipline - 5+ years experience in sales, microfinance, or field operations - Strong communication skills in English and local language - Smartphone proficiency - Willingness to work in the field daily - Must be based in Lagos/Abuja/Port Harcourt
