Digital Green
A tech nonprofit founded in 2009 that uses generative AI to build digital advisory systems, including the FarmerChat assistant, for smallholder farmers.
Digital Green is a global development organisation and technology nonprofit that builds digital advisory systems for smallholder farmers, using generative AI to deliver agricultural guidance at scale. Founded in 2009, it works with farming communities in five countries across two continents, with an overall remit of serving smallholder farmers worldwide. Its flagship product, FarmerChat, is a conversational AI assistant that provides timely, locally relevant agricultural advice in multiple languages, aimed at farmers who have traditionally lacked access to expert extension services.
The organisation's technical work spans generative AI, conversational AI and chatbots, agtech and data for technology-enabled development. Its approach is to shape solutions around local knowledge, language and farming conditions, developed in collaboration with farmers and grassroots organisations as well as academic and institutional partners. Industry focus areas include agriculture, agricultural extension, international development and climate resilience.
Digital Green reports a projected $52 increase in farmer income for every $1 invested in FY25. As a nonprofit, its work is supported by philanthropic funders including the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the Walmart Foundation, USAID and the Rockefeller Foundation. The organisation states a mission-oriented focus on building climate-resilient and prosperous farming communities.
