JOB SUMMARY
The Generator Technician
will be responsible for the day-to-day operation, preventive maintenance, fault
diagnosis, and repair of diesel standby generator sets (CAT and Perkins
platforms) ranging from mid-range to large industrial capacities, as part of a
layered, multi-source power management system (grid, generators, solar hybrid,
and UPS). The role requires a technician who can work independently on routine
PM tasks while escalating complex faults appropriately, and who understands the
operational discipline required on a live, 24/7, high-footfall facility.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
•Carry out scheduled preventive maintenance (weekly, minor/Type
1, major/Type 2, and extensive/Type 3 servicing) on diesel generator sets in
line with OEM (CAT/Perkins) intervals and manufacturer guidelines.
•Perform daily/weekly checks: oil and coolant levels, battery
voltage, fuel levels, leak inspection, exhaust system inspection, and
auto-start/exercise run tests.
•Diagnose and troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, and control
system faults on generator sets, including AMF/ATS panels, and carry out
first-line repairs.
•Support load bank testing, injector calibration, governor
calibration, and coolant system servicing during major and extensive service
cycles.
•Monitor fuel management systems and support maintenance of
minimum reserve levels for continuous standby readiness.
•Maintain accurate maintenance logs, service records, and defect
reports using the facility's CMMS/CAFM platform.
•Respond promptly to generator-related emergency call-outs and
support incident response for power failure events, including out-of-hours
where required.
•Ensure safe isolation, lock-out/tag-out (LOTO), and safety
interlock procedures are strictly followed at all times — no bypassing of
safety systems under any circumstance.
•Liaise with the Chief Engineer / Lead Engineering staff on parts
requisition, defect escalation, and PPM scheduling.
•Support onboarding of new generator units and condition
assessments as required.
•Maintain a clean, safe, and organised generator room/plant area
at all times.
Requirements
REQUIREMENTS &
QUALIFICATIONS
•OND/HND or Trade Certificate in Mechanical Engineering,
Electrical Engineering, or a related technical discipline (relevant hands-on
experience will also be considered).
•Minimum 3–6 years' hands-on experience maintaining and repairing
diesel standby generators, with direct working knowledge of CAT (Caterpillar)
and Perkins engine platforms.
•Practical experience across generator capacity ranges from ~500
kVA up to 1,500 kVA+ (industrial/commercial standby power).
•Working knowledge of AMF/ATS control panels, load bank testing
procedures, and basic power management principles.
•Manufacturer-recognised technical training/certification (CAT or
Perkins) is an advantage.
•Comfortable working with a CMMS/CAFM system for logging
maintenance activity (training provided if not previously used).
•Strong fault-finding and diagnostic skills, with a methodical,
safety-first approach to work.
•Willingness to work shifts, be on standby/on-call, and respond
to emergency call-outs outside normal hours.
•Good communication skills and the ability to work as part of a
wider engineering team on a live operational site.
•Physically fit and able to work in a plant-room/industrial
environment (climbing, lifting, confined spaces where applicable).
Benefits
WHAT WE OFFER
•Competitive salary commensurate with experience.
•Structured PPM environment with clear procedures, tools, and
CMMS support.
•Opportunity to work on a large-scale, high-profile facility with
a diverse and modern power infrastructure (grid, generator fleet, solar hybrid,
UPS).
•Career development within a growing Integrated Facilities
Management company.
