Clinton Health Access Initiative

CHAI works with governments to strengthen public and private health systems in over 35 countries across Africa, Asia and Latin America, embedded in Ministries of Health.

The Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI) is a global health organisation that works alongside governments to strengthen public and private health systems in developing countries. Rather than delivering healthcare services directly, the group is embedded within Ministries of Health, operating at the intersection of government, business and health. Its stated purpose is to widen access to care on the view that no one should die because they cannot obtain it.

CHAI maintains a presence in more than 35 countries across Africa, Asia and Latin America. Its centre of gravity lies in the countries it serves: roughly 85% of staff are based locally, and nearly 70% are nationals of the countries where they work. The organisation argues that sustainable change in global health is achieved by working with governments, not above them.

The working culture is described as entrepreneurial and frugal, with an emphasis on speed and adaptation to real-world conditions. Staff are expected to be problem-solvers who act with urgency, given that lives are at stake, and to remain humble enough to learn from the communities in which they operate. The organisation identifies its people as its principal asset.
