Action Against Hunger is a global humanitarian organisation founded in 1979 by a group of French doctors, scientists, and writers, initially inspired by Nobel Prize-winning physicist Alfred Kastler. The organisation operates in more than 55 countries, employing over 8,500 staff, with more than 95% recruited locally in the communities where they work.
The organisation's work focuses on four technical domains: Nutrition and Health, Water, Sanitation and Hygiene, Food Security and Livelihoods, and Emergency Response. A notable innovation is its therapeutic milk formula (F100), used worldwide to treat acute malnutrition, which has reduced mortality rates among severely malnourished children to below 5%. In total, the organisation reaches over 26.5 million people across its programmes.
Action Against Hunger directs 90% of donations directly to its programmes. It has been recognised as one of the world's highest-rated nonprofits by Charity Navigator, Candid, and Charity Watch.
