Médecins du Monde

International medical humanitarian organisation founded in 1980, delivering care, emergency response and advocacy for healthcare access in around 30 countries.

Médecins du Monde is an independent international medical humanitarian organisation founded in 1980 by 15 French doctors. It works in France and in approximately 30 countries across all continents to guarantee universal and sustainable access to healthcare for the most vulnerable populations. The organisation operates on three fronts: emergency medical response, when international institutions cannot act; direct medical care and support delivered in the field; and advocacy and testimony, bearing witness to intolerable conditions and pressing for lasting improvements in health-for-all policies.

Staff and thousands of volunteers support a 2021 budget of €107m. The work spans humanitarian aid, healthcare, public health and human rights, and medical, paramedical and operational professionals are deployed to programmes in the field as well as to emergency responses. Voluntary work has been a core objective since the organisation's founding.

Médecins du Monde maintains an independent stance and frames healthcare as a fundamental human right. Its advocacy focuses on six political battles: Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights, Migration and Health, Harm Reduction, Environment and Health, Humanitarian Space, and Healthcare Systems and Rights.
